The UK Government deserves to fall over this issue.
The endemic neoliberal corruption underpinning it all is exactly
what the Tower residents activist blog called an evil mafia.
The horrendous fire at London's Grenfell Tower
is symptomatic of everything that is wrong with
a decades long culture of corporate greed and
remorseless exploitation of ordinary citizens.
Here's a stark warning from a residents group blog attempting to bring
public pressure on the responsible management association, KCTMO
- Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organization, which
oversees 10,000 properties under CEO Robert Black:
KCTMO Ė Playing with fire!
Posted on November 20, 2016 by grenfellactiongroup
It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders.
We believe that the KCTMO are an evil, unprincipled, mini-mafia who have no business to be charged with the responsibility of looking after the every day management of large scale social housing estates and that their sordid collusion with the RBKC Council is a recipe for a future major disaster.
Unfortunately, the Grenfell Action Group have reached the conclusion that only an incident that results in serious loss of life of KCTMO residents will allow the external scrutiny to occur that will shine a light on the practices that characterise the malign governance of this non-functioning organisation.
We believe that the KCTMO have ensured their ongoing survival by the use of proxy votes at their Annual General Meeting that see them returned with a mandate of 98% in favour of the continuation of their inept and highly dangerous management of our homes. It is no coincidence that the 98% is the same figure that is returned by the infamous Kim Jong-un of North Korea who claims mass popularity while reputedly enslaving the general population and starving the majority of his people to death.
It is our conviction that a serious fire in a tower block or similar high density residential property is the most likely reason that those who wield power at the KCTMO will be found out and brought to justice!
The Grenfell Action Group believe that the KCTMO narrowly averted a major fire disaster at Grenfell Tower in 2013 when residents experienced a period of terrifying power surges that were subsequently found to have been caused by faulty wiring. We believe that our attempts to highlight the seriousness of this event were covered up by the KCTMO with the help of the RBKC Scrutiny Committee who refused to investigate the legitimate concerns of tenants and leaseholders.
We have blogged many times on the subject of fire safety at Grenfell Tower and we believe that these investigations will become part of damning evidence of the poor safety record of the KCTMO should a fire affect any other of their properties and cause the loss of life that we are predicting:
In October 2015 a fire ripped through another KCTMO property, the 14 storey Adair Tower in North Kensington, causing mass panic and resulting in a number of residents taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. It is reported that had it not been for the swift actions of the London Fire Brigade the consequences of this fire and potential loss of life could have been much worse.
In the aftermath of the Adair Tower fire the London Fire Brigade found that the KCTMO had not been looking after the safety of residents properly and issued an Enforcement Order compelling them to improve the fire safety in the escape staircases and to provide self closing devices to all the tower blockís front doors.
A further audit by the London Fire Brigade of the neighbouring Hazelwood Tower (located alongside Adair Tower) found similar breaches of health and safety legislation and an Enforcement Order was also issued for this property forcing the TMO to address the serious concerns of the Fire Brigadeís inspectors. What is shocking is that a decade ago a fatality occurred due to a fire at Hazelwood Tower and the Fire Investigation Team ordered that the grills on the fire escape staircase be covered over. This never happened and it is believed that the uncovered grills at Adair House (Hazelwood Towerís twin block) acted like a chimney and were responsible for the accelerated spread of the fire and smoke damage.
In the last twenty years and despite the terrifying power surge incident in 2013 and recent fire at Adair Tower, the residents of Grenfell Tower have received no proper fire safety instructions from the KCTMO.
Residents were informed by a temporary notice stuck in the lift and one announcement in a recent regeneration newsletter that they should remain in their flats in the event of fire. There are not and never have been any instructions posted in the Grenfell Tower noticeboard or on individual floor as to how residents should act in event of a fire. Anyone who witnessed the recent tower block fire at Shepherds Court, in nearby Shepherdís Bush, will know that the advice to remain in our properties would have led to certain fatalities and we are calling on our landlord to re-consider the advice that they have so badly circulated.
The Grenfell Action Group predict that it wonít be long before the words of this blog come back to haunt the KCTMO management and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those in authority know how long and how appallingly our landlord has ignored their responsibility to ensure the heath and safety of their tenants and leaseholders. They canít say that they havenít been warned!
But their complaints about the management company go back to 2013 -
and as is so common, the corruption extended into the authorities which
had legal responsibility to exercise prudence:
Another Fire Safety Scandal
Posted on February 21, 2013 by grenfellactiongroup
When we published our two recent items on Fire Safety in the Grenfell Tower area we expected to see some serious repercussions. Our earlier complaints to Siobhan Rumble had, of course, been copied to senior figures at RBKC, including the Director of Housing and the Cabinet Member for Housing, so we fully expected to see evidence of some kind of seismic upheavel following our revelations. Nothing of the sort happened. There wasnít so much as a peep out of Coleridge or his deputy Laura Johnson.
Here's another post just two days ago which shows that
the same cozy cartels of vested interest still held sway:
KCC Ė Clear And Present Danger
Posted on June 12, 2017
Instead of working in partnership with the North Kensington community, acknowledging the management and financial problems at KCC, and the threat to the long term future of Wornington College following the departure of Principal Mark Brickley, the College opted instead for a disingenuous propoganda campaign. Using similar tactics to those employed by the neo-Cons at RBKC, when they sold off the North Kensington Library to their friends at Notting Hill Prep School, the KCC management claimed, in a Press Release in April 2017, that the Wornington building was no longer fit for purpose, was too large and could not meet the needs of those students and staff with disabilities......

Victims of the Grenfall Tower blaze were 'left to die' in a building that was a 'disaster waiting to happen'
by Abe Hawken and Joseph Curtis
Victims of the Grenfall Tower blaze were 'left to die' in a building that was a 'disaster waiting to happen', according to the furious community.
Others claimed the Ladbroke Grove area was being neglected because of poverty and that 'it would not happen in Chelsea'.
Many accused the building's management of using 'shoddy materials' and said the 'plastic lagging' let to the fire spreading within just minutes.
Flowers were left as tributes to victims with notes reading 'Justice must be done. People before money'.
The diverse community includes people from various backgrounds including Muslim, Sikh, white British and Caribbean origins.
Elaine Hawkins, 58, who has lived in the area for 50 years, said: 'We are poor here but we are not destitute. We are working class families who come together to help each other - young, old, whatever the background.
'But you look around and think 'Where is Notting Hill? Where is Holland Park? Where is the help?'
Jade Ellis, 52, who has also lived in the area all her life, added: 'When you do not have, you show love. When you have, you do not show love.'
Maureen Hawkins, Elaine's sister, 60, added: 'We are all devastated here, there were children in there. How did this happen to that building? It has melted and it does not make sense.'
Another woman who appeared to be very distressed outside the Latymer Church, which is being used to shelter those displaced, shouted 'People have been left to die. The wrong materials were used on the building, how can that happen?'
She added: 'This does not happen in Kensington. This does not happen in Chelsea.'
Sonya Sorhaindo, 49, who has lived in the area her whole life, said she felt the emergency services were slow to respond.
She said: 'I was out here watching the fire between 1.30am to 4.30am and I only saw water being used after I went back inside and turned on the television.
'They do a tough job but i felt this was slow.'

Ministers were warned numerous times over the cladding that turned the Grenfell Tower into an inferno but ignored the advice of fire experts. The Home Office was handed a damning report after hundreds of residential tower blocks were surveyed in the 1990s - but did nothing.
The study, carried out by architect Sam Webb, found that half of the buildings inspected did not meet basic fire safety regulations.
Fire expert Mr Webb described the state of Britain's tower blocks as a 'disaster waiting to happen'. He told the Guardian: 'We discovered a widespread breach of safety, but were simply told nothing could be done because it would make too many people homeless.'
The former chairman of the tenancy organisation connected to Grenfell said the fire was a 'scandal' that could have been avoided.
Reg Kerr-Bell said he stood down from the Kensington and Chelsea Tenancy Management Organisation (KTMO) several years ago over his concerns about the way it was run.
He said: 'This is a scandal. This is one of the biggest scandals in the country - and it could have been avoided.'
He added: 'This refurbishment contract should never have been managed by KTMO. It was too big for them. My great concern was about the viability of the project.'
He said he met a former director two days ago to discuss his concerns.

The boss of the company paid almost £3million for the cladding at Grenfell Tower that sparked 'like a match' is holed up in his £1million home today.
But Ray Bailey's company secretary wife Belinda spoke at their grand house in Crowborough, East Sussex, and denied any knowledge about work at the west London block where at least 17 died yesterday.
Mother-of-three Mrs Bailey, whose Facebook profile shows her sitting next to a tiger on an exotic holiday and enjoying luxurious ski trips, insisted there 'was nothing to say' from behind electric gates.
Four cars including a Land Rover and a Porsche were parked outside.
Her businessman husband Ray, 58, who entered the curtain walling business straight from university, brags of 25 years of 'practical experience' on Harley Facades Ltd's website.
Experts were last night focusing their blame for the scale of the disaster on external cladding fitted to the block only last year - with witnesses describing how it acted like a 'firelighter' on a barbecue as flames engulfed Grenfell in 15 minutes.
Speaking of evil mafia...
There is a shocker the fire engulfed the entire structure, parts of it were still burning after 36 hours and yet the structure remained standing unlike Building 7.
I am sure it's just a matter of erm superior build quality though or something
Evidence has emerged that the Grenfell inferno was aggravated by gas pipes were run up the emergency exit stairwell to provide the cheapest access to individual flats.
Furthermore, the manufacturer of the external cladding offers three types -of which one is NOT fire resistant and is 7% cheaper. That variety was tested and it burns at less than building fire temperatures.
Also singer Lily Allen has accused mainstream media and government of covering up the death toll. Live on Channel 4 News she said:
"I feel like the government are trying to micromanage peopleís grieving hereÖ Iíve never in my entire life seen an event like this, where the death count has been downplayed by the mainstream media. 17? Iím sorry, but Iím hearing from people that the figure is much closer to 150, and that many of those people are children."
"This isn't a race thing. This is a class thing."

Interviewer, "what do you want to happen now."
Ishmahil, "I want it to be a revolution in this country.
I say fuck the media. Fuck the mainstream.
You don't deserve to be there. I mean we should be campaigning not to
the government but to the BBC who acts as mouthpieces for this corrupt
government. People need a revolution in this country. Nothing short of
that and in any other country there'd have damned been a revolution."
