Cause of Manhattan manhole explosions investigated

Associated Press Updated February 3, 2014, 5:52 a.m. ET

NEW YORK Authorities are investigating the cause of three manhole
explosions in midtown Manhattan.

Fire officials responded to 450 W. 42nd Street after receiving calls of an
explosion on 42nd Street between 8th and 9th avenues around 10:20 p.m.
Sunday.

A Con Ed crew remains on the scene early Monday morning. A spokesman
says three manhole covers popped but there were no outages or injuries.

He says the cause is still under investigation. But he explained that in
wintertime street salt sometimes can get below ground and eat away
at the wires. That causes gases to appear in the manhole and the
pressure can cause the lid to be lifted

What a lame-ass explanation for what was, according
to those on the scene, an explosion of great power:

LOL - No 'wires being eaten away by street salt' are ever going to produce anywhere near enough gas to blow manhole covers to bits like that. Gawd - people really *must* have absolutely *no idea* about basic science if that kind of explanation satisfies them.... Shocked

i think you're correct that most people have a poor understanding of basic science. i think though that most people do not require satisfactory explanations. if a story is covered in the news media, whatever explanation is offered will suffice. if a story is not covered in the news media, no explanation is necessary. sad state of affairs, the modern public discourse...
