Yesterday:
Turkish Police Attack Protesting Lawyers at Courthouse, Many Arrests
[VIDEO] http://bit.ly/13zQqp9

See above for what happened yesterday.

The reaction today to the arrest of over 50 lawyers shows
this is no longer remotely about a park redevelopment.

(-which is why the PM today offered a referendum on
that issue - during a meeting with fake "occupiers.")

This is now clearly a straightforward human rights battle.
No more jailed journalists. No more rough-house police tactics
and no more arbitrary politically-motivated detentions.

The presence of many thousands of lawyers on the streets
today --protesting how their legal colleagues were beaten
by police yesterday-- is a sign that civil professionals have
had enough.

They voiced a key new anti-government chant slogan:
"Lawyers can’t be dragged on the ground!"

Take a close look at the head count below - in
a protest march extending into the far distance.

Those are all lawyers. In revolt.
It's never going back from here.

Quote:

Thousands Of Turkish Lawyers Join Protests

Thousands of black-robed Turkish lawyers stormed out of their courthouses
Wednesday, shouting about the rough treatment police dished out to their
colleagues amid Turkey’s biggest anti-government protests in years.

The rallies by clapping, chanting jurists added a new twist to the nearly
two weeks of protests that started in Istanbul and spread to dozens of
other Turkish cities....

Police and protesters mostly retrenched Wednesday after fierce overnight
clashes in Istanbul’s Taksim Square — a hiatus before Erdogan was to host
talks with some protesters later in the day.

Sema Aksoy, the deputy head of the Ankara lawyer’s association, said the
lawyers were handcuffed and pulled over the ground. She called the police
action an affront to Turkey’s judicial system.

Lawyers can’t be dragged on the ground!’ the demonstrating lawyers
shouted in rhythm
as they marched out of an Istanbul courthouse. Riot
police stood off to the side, shields at the ready.

Turkey’s Human Rights Foundation said the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s
office had launched an investigation into allegations of excessive use of
police force during the protests.

The foundation said 620 people, including a one-year-old baby, were
injured during the police crackdown early Wednesday
. Police detained
some 70 people during the incidents.

Prior to this, activists reported that 5,000 people had been injured or
seriously affected by the tear gas and four people have died from the
protests.

During the events our friends would look at us and ask us
why we are teary-eyed, if it is because of the tear gas.

“No,” we would say, “our eyes are teary, because for the
first time the taxes we paid are being returned to us!”

Turkey government freezes Gezi Park project

Turkey's government has agreed to suspend redevelopment plans
for a park in Istanbul until a court rules on the issue.

After late-night talks with protesters, a government spokesman said there
would be no attempt to start the project until a court decided on its legality.

The plan to rebuild an old barracks on Gezi Park has sparked Turkey's
biggest anti-government protests in decades. If the court backed the
government, the project would be put to a popular vote.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-22902308

The minor development last night was the 'concessions' on Gezi Park.

The key development that the threatened
police assault on protesters did not happen.

Erdogan had looked the protesters in the eye - and blinked.

Kicking the hornet's nest of resistance wouldn't have been smart.
Destroying Turkey's economy wouldn't exactly help his reelection.

So we have a standoff while both sides take stock
and examine their roles in the post-uprising nation.

Quite a novel situation to be in.

If this turns into a new era of politics, without any further
overt (or covert) crackdown, it will be a big win for Turkey.

But the iron fist is still inside the velvet glove. There are no
real concessions on freedom of assembly or illegal detentions
etc., etc..

And the thugs are still detaining journalists. In this case, livestreaming
Russian journalist Arkadi Babchenko - who was beaten up after arrest:

Police entered the Hilton hotel in Istanbul to try tackle protesters
who have used the facility as a safe-haven, Saturday. Reportedly, the
Hilton allowed protesters to seek refuge in its plush lobby and bar, but as
tensions continue to rise in the city as the government seeks to regain full
control, police entered to clear the hotel.
