The Fourth Way enneagram is a mystic figure, believed to have been first published in 1947 in search of the Miraculous by P.D. Ouspensky. The term “enneagram” derives from two Greek words, ennea (nine) and grammos (something written or drawn). The enneagram is a nine-pointed figure usually inscribed within a circle.
Gurdjieff developed the 9 personality types. The enneagram symbol was used by spiritual teacher Gurdjieff who may have learned it from Sufis or Christian monks.

The Law of Three, in a short description, means that three forces enter into every manifestation, into every phenomenon, and every event. They are called (but these are only words, because they do not express their qualities) positive, negative and neutralising, or active, passive and neutralising; or, still more simply, they may be called first force, second force and third force.
These three forces enter into everything. In many cases we understand the need for two forces — that one force cannot create an action, that there is action and resistance. But generally we are not aware of the third force. This is connected with the state of our being, the state of our consciousness. In another state we would be aware of it in many cases where we do not see it now. Sometimes we can find examples of the third force in ordinary scientific study — for example, in chemistry and in biology we can find the necessity for a third force in the creation of events and phenomena.
We begin with the study of psychology. Later we shall talk more about three forces and we may find some examples of their interaction. But it is better to be prepared and get accustomed now to the idea of the need to study these three forces. |

The Law of Seven must also be described briefly. It means that no process in the world goes without interruptions.
In order to understand the meaning of this law it is necessary to regard the Universe as consisting of vibrations. Suppose something begins to vibrate at 1000 vibrations a second and the frequency increases to 2000 vibrations a second. This period is called an octave, because this law was applied to music and the period was divided into seven notes and a repetition of the first note.
The octave, particularly the major octave, is really a picture or formula of a cosmic law because, in common arrangements, within one octave there are two moments when octaves slow down by themselves. Vibrations do not develop regularly. In the major octave this is shown by the missing semi-tones; that is why we are told that it is a picture of a cosmic law; but this law is not restricted to music.
The reason why it is necessary to understand the Law of Seven is that it plays a very important part in all events. If there were no Law of Seven, everything in the world would go directly to its final conclusion; but because of this law, everything deviates. For instance, if rain began it would go on without stopping; if floods began, they would cover everything; if an earthquake began it would go on indefinitely. But they stop because of the Law of Seven, because at every missing semi-tone things deviate; they do not go by straight lines.
The Law of Seven also explains why there are no straight lines in Nature. Everything in Life and in our machine is based on this law. So we shall study it in the work of our organism, because we have to study ourselves not only psychologically, not only in connection with our mental life, but also in connection with our physical life. In our physical processes we find many examples of the working of this law.
At the same time, the Law of Seven explains that, if you know how and at what moment to do it, you can give an additional shock to an octave and keep the line straight. We can observe in human activity how people start to do one thing and after some time do a quite different thing, still calling it by the first name without noticing that things have completely changed. But in personal work, particularly in work connected with this system, we must learn how to keep these octaves from deviating, how to keep a straight line. Otherwise we shall not find anything. |
Here is Ouspensky's basic description of the Enneagram and its elements:
"The symbol which takes the form of a circle divided into nine parts with lines connecting them together expresses the law of seven in its union with the law of three."
"The octave possesses seven tones and the eighth is a repetition of the first. Together with the two 'additional shocks' which fill the 'intervals' mi-fa and si-do, there are nine elements."
"The complete construction of this symbol which connects it with a complete expression of the law of octaves is more complicated than the construction shown. But even this construction shows the inner laws of one octave and it points out a method of cognizing the essential nature of a thing examined in itself."
2 semi-tones or conscious shocks and 9 octaves, let's try to break this down into simpler terms of understanding.
On Walter Russell's chart of the elements, the elements are placed along a continuous spectrum of increasing compression and resulting density and are organized into 9 octaves. The inert gases act as the beginning and end of each octave.
The nine octaves of the elements
All elements of matter pass through the nine and into the tenth octave, which is the start of another dimension as man consists of all elements of matter, man must also pass through the nine into the tenth octaves, and therefore so must all things including "spirit", as "spirit" is light.
This "tenth" octave is "Zero" in Rodin's "finger print of god", the vortex.
I believe at all levels just as all elements of matter transmute through the octave cycles from one form to another, this is how the alchemists of the past could turn any metal to gold by understanding the cycles.
Now as man has all the elements of the universe within him and as all above and below are the same except for dimensions, then man must also pass through nine octaves into the tenth for his next dimensional experience of time.

In Gurdjieff's enneagram, when we use it for the body types, the triangle simply represents the attraction and union between the maximum-attraction types.

I believe we can do much better then this.
Draw a straight line between Saturn and Lunar (numbers 8 and 1) (=9)
A line between Jupiter and Mercury (numbers 7 and 2) (=9)
A line between Mars and Venus (numbers 5 and 4) (=9)
The triangle in Gurdjieff's enneagram represents several things, but most of all the cosmic Law of Three Forces: affirming, denying and reconciling. Or: +, -, =
Contrary to what Rodin says it must be a triangle, and not just two lines going down from the 9. Well, maybe in Rodin's symbol it's right to do it that way, but not in the enneagram as taught by Gurdjieff.
The six-pointed shape in the enneagram represents The Law of Seven, or The Law of Octaves. These are the two fundamental cosmic laws and together they create all phenomena.
Perhaps we can say that the law of octaves, or the sequence 142857, works in time. While the law of three, the triangle 3-6-9, works outside of time. And it is very difficult, if at all possible, for us to point our finger and say "there is the 3" or "there is the 6 (or 9)." As the triangle has such an incredible, magical quality.
But the points, or notes, in the octave we can pinpoint.

The intervals or shock points correspond to the missing semi-tones of the musical octave between mi-fa and si-do. The Neutral force enters the octave as the Do note. The Passive force enters as the second octave beginning at the mi-fa interval and the Active force enters as the third octave beginning at the si-do interval.
The complete construction of the Enneagram is composed of three octaves, one for each of the three forces of the Law of Three, Active, Passive and Neutral. The diagram below shows the enneagram composed from the three octaves:
Below is a diagram of the Enneagram as it is commonly known, based on the diagram above, with the notes of the octave, the numbers and the shocks shown. The X marks the spot where the Second Shock should appear according to the Law of Seven.
Here is another way to view the Enneagram is as three overlapping octaves. This is similar to the diagram of the three foods that Ouspensky shows in his books. It is also a representation of the three centers of man.
The Enneagram is constructed from interval / shock points of the three octaves. Unfortunately with this approach, the Second Shock point gets moved from the si-do interval and is represented at point 6. This anomaly has caused much consternation to students of the Enneagram. Ouspensky said that this discrepancy indicated the nature of the Second Conscious Shock required for the development of the higher being bodies.
It may indicate that a degree of anticipation is required when applying the Second Conscious Shock at the si-do interval. It is also interesting to note that both Gurdjieff and Ouspensky indicated that the Second Shock is supplied by the Will of God or His Endlessness. What this means regarding the ultimate Nature of Man is left up to Seekers to discover for themselves.
In In Search of the Miraculous, Ouspensky first describes the Ray of Creation as one octave and he then adds a Lateral Octave, composed of three notes, which acts as the First Mechanical Shock at the mi-fa interval. He goes on to describe the Ray of Creation as composed of three octaves, and indicates that there are three Lateral Octaves, one for each of the three corresponding mi-fa intervals. He illustrates this with a diagram similar to the one at the right.
Given the displacement of the Second Shock mentioned previously when the three octaves are placed on an Enneagram, and noticing that on the Enneagram of the three overlapping octaves that the mi-fa shock of the outer third octave corresponds to the si-do shock of the inner Enneagram, one might surmise that the Second Shock requires the qualities of a Lateral Octave composed of three notes. The significance of this will become apparent when considering the Holy Affirming Prayer from Beelzebub's Tales as a three term equation for the Second Conscious Shock.

Your right, the first author has got the enneagram in the right zodiacal position, but the planets and musical spectrum of color are way off. We have to match the musical notes in the circle of fifths to the signs of the zodiac, since they are in dis-order in the second picture of the fifths.
All signs have a corresponding major and minor key. The word "Major" on the cycle of 4ths/cycle of 5ths chart signifies that the outside letters are the Major keys and the word minor signifies that the inside smaller letters represent the minor keys.
Aries = C Major = A minor
Taurus = Db/C# Major = Bb Minor
Gemini = D Major = B minor
Cancer = Eb/D# Major = C minor
Leo = E Major = C#/Db Minor
Virgo = F Major = D minor
Libra = F#/Gb Major = D#/Eb Minor
Scorpio = G Major = E minor
Sagittarius = G#/Ab Major = F Minor
Capricorn = A Major = F#/Gb Minor
Aquarius = A#/Bb Major = G Minor
Pisces = B Major = G#/Ab Minor
Aolian is the mode that corresponds to minor and Ionian is the mode that corresponds to Major.

In fact Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, and Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are all in exactly the same positions they’re in on a regular Astrology chart. The others; the Water and Earth signs are now exactly opposite they’re common position on a conventional astrology chart. |
Note that I am still trying to wrap my head around all this as well, as I am no musician, but effort is being made to understand this into further detail, music is not exactly the easiest subject to grasp, that is for sure.
