THE ORANGE PAPERS

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance — that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
HERBERT SPENCER

The above famous misquote1 was put in the Big Book by William G. Wilson, in Appendix II, "Spiritual Experience", in the back of the second and third editions. Bill Wilson was trying to imply that we should not dismiss his "spiritual cure for alcoholism" without first trying it.
That is curious, because in 1864 Herbert Spencer was actually arguing against fundamentalist religious beliefs and dogmatic blind faith, and in favor of Charles Darwin's new theory of evolution.

Nevertheless, that quote sounds like good advice. So let's really, honestly, investigate Alcoholics Anonymous, without rejecting criticism of A.A. before investigation of all of the facts...

Just to play devil's advocate:

I'm mostly siding with orange on this one though.
The only positive thing about AA is that it's a social network.

I was raised in an environment surrounded by AA.
There are decent people there, but sometimes it seems because
they have lost all of their other friends to drinking.
Some go all the way into the Kool aid fest, the rest
drift around with a constant attitude of "oh well could be worse".

My mother was so afraid that I was going to become
an alcoholic so she decided to remind me of this constantly
at a very young age. She did a great job!
I forgive and love her for eternity, but as many times as I
try to join the program, the feeling increases that it's just not for me.

Orange papers is frightening in it's accuracy, even for it's bias.

Love you mom I'm doing a great job tackling sobriety not
just on my own but with the help of my wonderful friends.
I don't need to hit rock bottom.
I pray ( yeah mom, pray) that one day you will realize that I'm
not just a dry drunk. We don't have to live with this label anymore.

Still forgive you. Wink
You did fine.
