For anyone who's never seen.

There is a light bulb in a fire station in California, made in 1901, that has been on since sometime in 1972. It's made of different filaments than the "standard" light bulbs we're allowed to buy.

Someone needs to do a version with English subtitles for the German, Spanish and French sections. This is Norwegian, I believe. Or Swedish. Or possibly Hindi. Smile

Responsible Recycling Vs. Global Dumping

When we drop off our old computers at an e-waste collection event, or have a recycler come and get them from our offices, we want to believe that the recycler is going to do the right thing: to reuse them if possible, and handle them in ways that are safe for workers and the environment. Electronics contain many toxic chemicals, and so a responsible recycler is one that is making sure that he and the other vendors he may sell parts or materials to is managing all aspects of the business as safely as possible.

The problem is that many electronics recyclers dont actually recycle the electronics they collect from us. They can make more money by selling old electronic products to exporting waste traders than by processing it here in the U.S. Traders send it to developing countries where workers earn extremely low wages (often a few dollars per day) and where health and safety and environmental laws, enforcement, infrastructure and citizens rights are very weak.

Simply stated, we are solving our e-waste problem by exporting it to poor countries around the globe.

I seen this in January they had it on the unwelcome guest radio show, all in audio form. then I found the video version. Planned obsolescence is a great topic and something I hate.

... after finding out somethings about led lights it sounds promising they can last as long as they say they can!

"Electrical lighting was invented in 1809 by the English chemist Humphry Davy. Improvements were made in 1820 by Warren de la Rue, in 1835 by James Lindsay, in 1850 by Edward Shepard, in 1854 by Henricg Globel, in 1875 by Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans, and in 1878 by Sir Joseph Swan, who developed the first light bulb which would burn for hours.

In 1879, Edison invents a light bulb which burns about twice as long as Swans before failure. The invention is based on a patent Edison bought of the 1875 Woodward and Evans development and on work stolen from other inventors including Swan. Edison was successfully sued by Sir Joseph Swan for patent infringement and, in 1883, Edisons U.S. patent of the light bulb was disallowed by the U.S. Patent Office because it was based on the prior work of other inventors.
