Today science is the new occult religion but still maintains many trappings of the old, within its strictly maintaned dogma, which persecutes its heretics through the complicit mass media and the direction of funding in the institutions of learning. The universities are the church's, where the initiated worship the glory of the scientific method. A method which states that the primary phenomena of nature can only be perceived indirectly through measurement by instruments and analytical techniques, which the application thereof can only be acquired after rigorous training to focus the attention in whichever specialality. Therefor our handed down reality is hidden(occult) and can only be deciphered by the high preists. The reality that we encounter everyday is an epi-phenomenom of the real causes which are protons neutrons electons leptons etc, translated into mathematical concepts. This reductionist viewpoint requires ever more specialised disciplines in any given field, this narrowing of focus is a self perpetuating property of the paradigm. The more we use these methods to describe and manipulate the world the more insular and detactched we become from the world, and this a trend we are seeing everywhere. Science dictates a lot of political policy which reinforces the scientific viewpoint which thereby dictates more policy. (in fact in some areas the two are in collusion through hidden agendas). Because we defer to, there is now only the scientific version of nature(in the mainstream), no longer do we have an open-mindedness to natures phenomena outside of the objective methodology. And this breakdown of our own awareness of nature is the reason for the breakdown in our relationship with nature. Perceiving nature from the outside gives us no sense of danger when exploiting nature to the detriment of the world as a whole's well being.
