Pop goes flab: CO ˛ jab helps shed kilos

London:
Carbon dioxide, the natural gas which is blamed for global warming, may now help one shed those extra flab.
Scientists at the University of Siena in Italy have claimed to have developed an injection of CO ˛ , which is used to make drinks fizzy, to tackle fat levels in obese people, who are at risk of future health problems.
The researchers, who had tested the new jab on 48 women with fatty tissue on their thighs, knees and abdomen, found that on average, their thighs reduced by 2 centimetres, and they lost 1 centimetre from each knee and 3 centimetres from the stomach.
The latest clinical trial at Northwestern University in the US will be the first to target overweight patients. After losing weight, they will be encouraged to adopt a healthier lifestyle, the Daily Mail reported.
In the new treatment, which is known as carboxytherapy, a fine needle is used to inject CO ˛ just under the skin. The procedure takes just a few minutes and is believed to work because the gas diffuses into the surrounding tissues, causing blood vessels to dilate.
Wider vessels mean a stronger blood supply, which brings a rush of oxygen and nutrients to the treated area.

The CO ˛ kills fat cells, while the extra oxygen eliminates fluid build-up between cells.
However, Nick Finer of University College London said that while the therapy may reduce waist size, it’s unlikely to lower other health risks associated with being overweight.
“These injections are tackling the fat under the skin, but it is stored fat in the abdomen that raises the risk of diabetes, heart disease and so on,” Finer said. “However, if this can give patients the psychological boost they need to adopt a healthier lifestyle, then it can only be a good thing.” PTI
