7 dead, 20 wounded in mass shooting at Fort Hood

Updated: 11/5/2009 2:51 PM By: News 8 Austin Staff

A mass shooting at Fort Hood Thursday has resulted in seven deaths and as many as 20 wounded.

A City of Killeen spokesperson has confirmed three shooters were involved, with one in custody, one surrounded by SWAT teams and the third at-large.

Officials at Fort Hood have not confirmed information about the two soldiers not in custody, but said two injuries are serious.

A spokeswoman with Scott & White health center confirmed that the hospital is receiving patients from Fort Hood who have gunshot wounds.

News reports indicated the attack could have been a terrorist attack, however, NBC's Pete Williams reported a federal official has said early indications suggest that the incident involved "all military, both shooters and victims."

The Fort Hood post is on lockdown, officials said. Multiple news sources said sirens are sounding to let everyone know to remain indoors.

All Temple Independent School District schools have been put on soft lockdown, authorities said.

Fort hood officials are in the process of accounting for everyone on the base.

An Army spokesman at the Pentagon said the shootings began about 1:30 p.m. Thursday at a personnel and medical processing center at Ft. Hood.

Lt. Col. Nathan Banks said two shooters were apparently involved. There is no word yet on who they were, nor on the identities of the dead.

The second incident took place at a theater on Ft. Hood, according to Banks.

Some media reports said the number of victims remained unclear.

Banks said a motive wasn't immediately known and it is too soon to tell whether there is any link to battle stress or repeated deployments. The Army is suffering a record high suicide rate and other signs of stress from fighting two wars.

Army officials didn't know whether the victims were civilians or military personnel.

The men were reportedly dressed in Army fatigues, but military officials couldn't confirm that they were Army personnel.

Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said the shooting was a terrible tragedy for all of the military families affected.

She said the post is a processing center where soldiers are processed before going to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Robert Maginnis told Fox News those at the base are trained for combat and it is not unusual to see armed people there.

"It could be a terror attack, it could be a disenchanted soldiers, it could be a varity of people," said Maginnis.

12 confirmed dead now, according to the MSM. (Gotta go take a shower, I just forced myself to watch CNN for 25 minutes.)

Btw, it appears to be all about "handguns." Confused

Now Cliff Van Zandt, the current reinforcing agent of the bullshit "serial killer profile" meme just mentioned "al-Qaeda", and Ft Hood being "on their wish list." Along with their "desire to enroll US passport-carrying citizens into terrorist organizations."

The MSM is doing their gig, that much is certain. They'll be exhausted tonight, just from jumping to conclusions.

Violence All Too Familiar at Fort Hood

Thursday, November 05, 2009

A mass shooting Thursday at Fort Hood in Texas was the latest in a series of violence incidents at the military post in the past two years.

In September 2008, a 21-year-old Fort Hood soldier shot to death his lieutenant during a confrontation at his off-base apartment before turning the gun on himself.

The lieutenant and a staff sergeant went to the Army specialist's apartment, and a confrontation ensued. Killeen police officers responded to a call of a man with a gun, and they saw the specialist hit and then shoot the lieutenant as they arrived at the scene, Killeen police spokesman Carroll Smith said.

Two months later a New York parolee with an extensive criminal record was executed for robbing, raping and fatally shooting an Army medic at her apartment near Fort Hood.

Denard Manns, 42, who came to Texas after a second prison sentence in New York for armed robbery, was condemned for the murder 10 years ago of Michelle Robson, 26.

In July of 2009, Fort Hood Spc. Armano Baca was charged with murdering fellow soldier Spc. Ryan Richard Schlack from Wisconsin.

Baca and Schlack were members of the 1st Calvary Division and had recently returned from tours in Iraq.

Schlack was shot during a party at the Central Texas Army post and died at a Fort Hood hospital July 18.

Three months ago Spc. Jared Lee Bottorff was charged with murder after a shooting at a party near the post.

At the time, police said Bottorff and another soldier was at a party at house when a fight broke out and someone was shot and killed.

Bottorff was jailed on $1 million bond.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Thanks Rump....

Ok Latest is:

Fort Hood shooter.

US Army Major Malik Nadal Hassan

an Army Mental Health Professional

Quote:
A source tells CBS News investigative producer Len Tepper that Hasan is a licensed psychiatrist in Bethesda, Md. He is a drug and rehab specialist who got his Virginia psychiatry license July 12, 2005.

It was not known whether he was treating people at the base.

Officials says it was not clear what Hasan's religion was, but investigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name or if he may have changed his name and converted to the Islamic faith at some point.

According to the Army Times, Hasan was promoted to Major, medical corps on April 22, 2009.

Shootings at Fort Hood; 11 soldiers, shooter killed
By Bill RoggioNovember 5, 2009 4:30 PM

Gunmen have opened fire on US soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, the largest US military base in America. Initial reports indicate the attack took place at a readiness center where soldiers prepare to deploy overseas. Twelve people, including the shoot, a soldier named Major Malik Nidal Hassan, have been reported killed and more than 30 have been wounded according to initial reports. Two other suspects were arrested for involvement in the attacks, initial reports indicate the men are US soldiers.

The Pentagon is urging the media not to speculate on the motive for the attack. ABC News' Brian Ross described Major Malik Nidal Hassan a convert to Islam.

Daveed Gartenstein Ross, a Long War Journal/Threat Matrix contributor and the Director of Foundation for the Defense of Democracies' Center for Terrorism Research, said this about the attack:

"One important aspect of this case will be assessing whether Major Malik Hassan and his accomplices were acting out of religio-political motivations, or whether there was another cause to the shooting. In Asan Akbar's 2003 grenade attack on fellow soldiers, he was very upfront about why he did it. Until the motivation is known, we won't know if this was an act of terrorism; but if it was terrorism, understanding the process of radicalization that they went through will be critical."

Daveed is an expert on the radicalization process, you can read his recent radicalization study here.

Some notes on the attack:

• Initial attacks, which began at about 1:30, appear to have taken place place near the Howze Theater and the Development Center, where US soldiers line up to prepare for deployments. Other clashes were reported near the PX and a softball field.
• Major Hassan, the shooter, was killed, two other soldiers thought to be involved in the attack have been captured. The identities of the two suspects have not been disclosed.

Details about Major Malik Nadal Hasan are sketchy. Information coming in from various media sources are simply conjecture. However, military analysts seem to believe that Hasan would, due to his rank, have had to have been deployed either to Iraq or Afghanistan in the recent past.

Major Malik Nadal Hasan opened fire on other soldiers at the Fort Hood Soldier Readiness Facility, where soldiers who are preparing to deploy go for last minute checkups and preparation. The facility is 117,000 sq. ft. in size, which so Hasan had a great deal of space to operate in, perhaps explaining the large number of those killed or wounded before he was himself killed.

A Fort Hood press release confirmed that "more than one shooter fired shots into the Soldiers Readiness Processing Center and Howze Theater on Fort Hood."

Quote:
There has been some confusion about the exact location of the shooting. Cone said that the shooting took place in the Readiness Center but that the two surviving suspects were taken into custody in an "adjacent facility." The Associated Press is reporting that shootings took place in two separate locations within the army post.

Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Nathan Banks, told the Associated Press that the shootings began at the Readiness Center and that a "second incident" took place at the movie theater - presumably the Howze theater identified in a press release.

At the Soldier Readiness Center, soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening - on average about 300-400 screened a day, said Sgt. Rebekah Lampam, a spokeswoman at Fort Hood.

Lampam said a graduation ceremony for soldiers who finished college courses while deployed was going on in the auditorium at the time of the shooting.

FBI agents have responded to the base and the military is asking the FBI's help in investigating the backgrounds of the two soldiers held as suspects in the shooting, Cone said.

A woman interviewed by CBS affiliate KWTX in Waco said that news of the shooting had reached her husband and other U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq.

At 2 p.m. emergency responders en route to Ft. Hood were told that their planned staging area, Soldier's Dome, was not safe to use, the Temple Daily Telegram reports.

"I was here for a 2 p.m. graduation," retired Army Col. Greg Schannep told the Telegram. "As I drove up, I heard some shots. A soldier came running past me and said, 'Sir there is someone shooting.'

"I heard three or four volleys of shots with eight to 12 shots in each volley. Initially, I thought it was a training exercise," he said.

Banks said it is too soon to tell whether there is any link to battle stress or repeated deployments. The Army is suffering a record high suicide rate and other signs of stress from fighting two wars.

In May, a U.S. soldier opened fire at a counseling center on a U.S. military base in Iraq, killing five fellow soldiers. An investigation showed that that shooter had shown signs of mental problems for months.

Quote:
The slain gunman was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, a law enforcement source told CNN. Licensed in Virginia, Hasan was a psychiatrist who previously worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center but more recently was practicing at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, according to professional records.

The shootings were “execution-style”, not random.

His cousin on Fox confirmed he was Muslim, raised in North Viginia.

He is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

Another colonel who served in the area with him confirmed shooter's
multiple confrontations with officers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He felt Muslims should stand up and fight the U.S. aggressors. Also felt he
should not be fighting in Iraq/Afganistan. Was very vocal about it.

He had recently experienced some "harrassment" in the military.

Already the MSM is trying to spin this as a build-up of tension, that suddenly exploded in a homicidal fury. What bullshit. The "breaking news" story I saw on MSNBC tonight spun this as a distraught soldier who was being re-deployed to Iraq, didn't want to go, didn't want to tell his family.....

The thing is, this couldn't possibly be true with two other gunman involved. Distraught suicidal/homicidal maniacs who are about to snap do not recruit others to join in on the mayhem. Not at Columbine, and not at Fort Hood.

This story http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33678801/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/?/456 says the shooter was killed, and two others arrested. Those "two others" are the key, and we should try and keep track of what happens to them.

Surviving Fort Hood shooting suspect
arrested at golf course, officer says

November 5, 2009 6:34 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- A senior officer who was playing golf Thursday near Fort Hood, Texas, told CNN he witnessed the arrest of one of the two surviving suspects of the shooting at the Army installation.

Shortly after the shooting, the officer said, military police told him to clear the course and he saw other MPs surround the building that held the golf carts, he said.

The senior officer said he ducked into a nearby house for cover as 30 to 40 cars carrying MPs approached.

He said he saw a soldier in battle-dress uniform, his hands in the air. The MPs ordered him to lie on the ground and open his uniform, presumably to ensure he was not carrying explosives, the senior officer said.

He said an MP told him that authorities considered the man to be a suspect in the shootings after having overheard the man say he was with the shooter.

The man was surrounded for 25 to 30 minutes, until a convoy of vehicles arrived, led by a Ford Crown Victoria and carrying men in suits, and he was taken away, the senior officer said.

The golf course is about 2.5 miles from Fort Hood, the officer told CNN.
