Does circumpolar circulation ring a bell? Vortex sounds technical and frightening.... and despite no way of reproducing it with their models, it can be trotted out as the latest CO2 induced bogey-man.

Sure does. This article is brief and comprehensible.

However, the vortex is up on a bum rap, say experts:

Quote:
As temperatures fell, some blamed a mysterious polar vortex, but this is a system of winds in the stratosphere that spins around the Arctic and Antarctic during their respective winters, many kilometres above the weather. There is nothing unusual about the polar vortex, according to the UK Met Office. Instead, cold Arctic air has reached North America thanks to a weakened jet stream – the continent's atmospheric conveyor belt.
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn24824-us-freeze-is-nothing-to-do-with-a-polar-vortex.html

"Vortex" does sound sexier though.

Actually, the simple explanation is that polar bears keep the Arctic warm.

And in recent years polar bears have been taking advantage of
cheap EasyJet flights to Florida. Besides wreaking havoc in the
rubbish bins all along International Drive, these furry tourists
have now tipped the globe into catastrophic climate change.

Or sumptn'..... Laughing

Speaking of the polar regions, Arctic sea-ice is on the mend (Death spiral? we don't need no stinkin' death-spiral....) and Antarctic sea-ice is growing as ever. Lots of info on the Turney expedition and how they got stuck in that same sea-ice.

Better invest in a down-filled parka....

UPDATE 2014, VISUAL PROOF OF GLOBAL COOLING

Published by Stephen Wilde February 15, 2014

The coldest period in the northern hemisphere is late January so here
I present temperature charts for the years 2008, 2012 and 2014, each
for the same date and time.

28 Jan 08
In 2008 central Greenland was very cold but not Siberia or Canada and the 10C isotherm travels to the north of Scotland.

28 Jan 2012
In 2012 Greenland was a little less cold but vast areas of Siberia and
Eastern Europe have cooled down considerably and colder air has moved
a little further beyond Hudson Bay in Canada. The 10C isotherm is still
north of Scotland but further to the west.

28 Jan 14
By 2014 the cold over Siberia has intensified considerably, Canada has
become much colder, especially Labrador, and the 10C isotherm is now
across south west England with a finger of colder water trying to
approach north western Spain.

The increased thermal gradient between pole and equator has spawned
exceptional storminess in the approaches to Western Europe resulting in
little frost or snow there but no exceptional warmth either.

Note that Anthropogenic Global Warming Theory proposes greatest
warming at the poles so there is clearly something wrong with that theory
.

However, the sun has been less active of late.

Signs of cooling are evident on a global scale

Posted: Monday, February 10, 2014 12:00 am | Updated: 12:02 am, Mon Feb 10, 2014.

Since the late 1990s, we've seen a rather remarkable absence of warming
in the Pacific Ocean and the North Atlantic to depths of 2,000 meters, some
6,800 feet. Only the South Atlantic and the Indian Oceans have continued
to show some slow warming to those depths.

If history repeats itself, and there is no reason to believe that it will not, it
is my opinion that even the South Atlantic and the Indian oceans will soon
begin to cool
, perhaps for the next several decades or more.

The summer sea icepacks are increasing in size in both the Arctic regions
and many areas surrounding the Antarctic continent. Ships have frequently
been trapped by extremely thick ice exceeding 10 to 12 feet in places in
both polar regions. Ironically, this included a ship filled with global warming
scientists and friends earlier in the Antarctic summer.

Land masses tend to experience changes in temperature on a global scale
much quicker than the vast oceans that cover two-thirds of the planet.

We've seen such a dramatic cooling in the past six to eight months in both
South America and North America.

The winter of 2013 in parts of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and
southeastern Brazil was the coldest in more than a century with 'rare'
snowfalls in many areas that hadn't seen such events in modern times.

The current winter of 2013-14 across the Northern Hemisphere has been
the harshest in living memory in many areas east of the Mississippi River
deep into the heart of Dixie. Just this past week, parts of Arkansas and
Tennessee had record snows and morning lows in the single digits.....

Not only have crops east of the Rockies been killed by an extended
period of record low temperatures this bitter winter of 2013-14, but in
the drought-parched Far West in California, a full week of sub-freezing
temperatures in early December cost the Golden State's citrus industry
at least $441 million in damage......

There were likewise losses in winter grains, citrus and vegetable crops this
winter in parts of Oklahoma, Texas and Mexico. The Florida citrus crops
and vegetables have thus far been spared any major cold weather
damage, but the harsh season isn't over yet.....

If this is 'global warming,' I'd hate to see 'global cooling!'

I am just old enough to recall the frigid 50's and the soggy 60's. That 60 year semi-cycle is also somewhat evident in the CET record (Central England Temps) going back to the 1700s.

Are we in a stall, a descent or a pause? Time will tell but not those damn computer models that only show warming apace....

Your own Met Office from back in the day said as much: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/more_or_less/8248922.stm#email

Since the AR5 SPM eschewed the actual scientific data for "opinion" that they were even more sure of CO2's guilt in causing catastrophic climate change, we can be pretty sure that anything goes. We have had a harsh but not exceptional winter here in the hinterlands and I am looking forward to Spring warmth.[/url]

It's not just that the over 17 year pause in warming
is a good reason to turn down the alarmist scares.

It that the pause has happened -despite tens of millions of tons
of additional Co2 being added yearly to the global atmosphere:

Quote:
No global warming for 17 years, 6 months

Special to Climate Depot: By Lord Christopher Monckton

Seventeen and a half years. Not a flicker of global warming.

The RSS satellite record, the first of the five global-temperature datasets
to report its February value, shows a zero trend for an impressive 210
months
.

The graph below shows no global warming at all for 17 years 6 months:

Monctkon analysis:

1: This graph is highly topical. It is right up to date.

Remote Sensing Systems, Inc. (RSS) is one of the two satellite-based
datasets (the other is the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH). And
RSS is one of the five standard global temperature datasets, which include
the two satellite datasets and the three terrestrial datasets – Goddard
Institute for Space Studies (GISS); the Hadley Centre/CRU dataset,
version 4 (HadCRUT4); and the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC).

As this month, RSS is usually the first to report, and its latest monthly
value, for February 2014, became available just hours ago.

2: The satellite datasets are based on measurements made by the most
accurate thermometers available

– platinum resistance thermometers, which not only measure temperature
at various altitudes above the Earth’s surface via microwave sounding
units but also constantly calibrate themselves by measuring the known
temperature of the cosmic background radiation, which is 1% of the
freezing point of water, or just 2.73 degrees above absolute zero.

It was by measuring minuscule variations of the cosmic background
radiation that the NASA anisotropy probe enabled the age of the Universe
to be determined: it is 13.82 billion years.

3: The graph is accurate.

The data are lifted monthly directly from the RSS website. They are read
down from the text file by a computer algorithm and plotted automatically
using an advanced routine that automatically adjusts the aspect ratio of
the data window at both axes so as to show the data at maximum size.

The latest monthly data point is visually inspected to ensure that it has
been correctly positioned. The light blue trend line plotted beneath the
dark blue spline-curve showing the actual data is calculated by the method
of least-squares linear regression, which determines the y-intercept and
slope of the line via two well-established and functionally identical
equations that are compared with one another to ensure no discrepancy
between them.

Least-squares linear regression is used by the IPCC and by most other
agencies for determining global temperature trends. Interestingly, it is
recommended by Professor Phil Jones of the University of East Anglia in
one of the Climategate emails, so no one on the true-believing side will
challenge its appropriateness. The reliability of the trend calculation by the
algorithm was verified by Dr Stephen Farish, Professor of Epidemiological
Statistics at the University of Melbourne.

4: The graph is news.

Not only is it very recent: it is also something that the mainstream news
media very seldom reveal. They tend to keep the now embarrassingly
long hiatus in global warming secret.

The Coming Paradigm Shift on Climate
By S. Fred Singer

The just-published NIPCC reports may lead to a paradigm shift about what or who causes current climate changes. All the evidence suggests that
Nature rules the climate – not Man.

Watch for it: We may be on the threshold of a tipping point in climate history. No, I’m not talking about a tipping point in the sense that the
Earth will be covered with ice or become hellishly hot.

I’m talking about a tipping point in our views of what controls the climate
-- whether it’s mainly humans or whether it’s mainly natural.

Fundamental Lies of The UN's IPCC:
"Food Production Harmed By CO2 & Warmer Temperatures"

Like the UN, the IPCC is a political organization that seemingly has a
primary objective of misleading the public and policymakers about
climate science. Another example of such behavior is.....

The empirical evidence and peer reviewed research is indisputable -
essential food production has dramatically improved while CO2 levels and
global temperatures increased.

Those are the stubborn facts that the adjacent chart reveals as
unequivocal.

http://c3headlines.typepad.com/.a/6a010536b58035970c01a511933417970c-450wi

Yet, because of the political-driven agenda the IPCC pursues, their latest
report states that the world's food production would be more "secure" if
CO2 emissions were reduced. Hmm...the exact opposite of known
scientific fact.

"There, it can be seen that enriching the air with CO2 almost always leads to significant increases in the photosynthetic rates and biomass production of all of the world's major food crops. And as for the highly-unlikely increase in global temperature that the world's climate alarmists predict to result from projected increases in the air's CO2 content, there are also many studies that reveal the positive consequences of warming for agriculture in Earth's cooler high-latitude regions, such as the recent study of Meng et al. (2014) dealing with maize production in the northern reaches of China. And there is also the significant body of work that reveals that as the atmosphere's CO2 concentration rises, the various temperatures at which different plants photosynthesize most proficiently rise right along with it..."

"Yet the primary efforts of both of these entities [Ed. the UN's IPCC and the UNFCCC] have been, and continue to be, directed against that which is most needed to produce the required amount food, as they both argue for reductions in anthropogenic CO2 emissions, which comprise much of the aerial "food" that sustains all of our food crops."

Truth be told, the headline of this post is not an IPCC quote but obviously it represents what the IPCC is attempting to convince the public of, and unfortunately, the real-world, objective science does not support it in the least.

Summary: The IPCC's fundamental lies continue to establish the blatant anti-science which permeates the entire UN's climate "research" reporting - it's propaganda spin all the way down.

World will start COOLING DOWN in 2017, claims one of planet's top climate change experts

Dr David Evans, a former climate modeller for the Government’s Australian Greenhouse Office, says global warming predictions have been vastly exaggerated in error.

The academic, from Perth, Australia, who has passed six degrees in applied mathematics, has analysed complex mathematical assumptions widely used to predict climate change and is predicting world temperature will stagnate until 2017 before cooling, with a 'mini ice age' by 2030.

Just saw this:
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/oct/14/exxons-climate-lie-change-global-warming

The Guardian's sources are "the website Inside Climate News and another crew composed of Los Angeles Times veterans and up-and-comers at the Columbia Journalism School".

Excerpt:
Quote:
By 1978 Exxon’s senior scientists were telling top management that climate change was real, caused by man, and would raise global temperatures by 2-3C this century, which was pretty much spot-on.

By the early 1980s they’d validated these findings with shipborne measurements of CO2 (they outfitted a giant tanker with carbon sensors for a research voyage) and with computer models that showed precisely what was coming. As the head of one key lab at Exxon Research wrote to his superiors, there was “unanimous agreement in the scientific community that a temperature increase of this magnitude would bring about significant changes in the earth’s climate, including rainfall distribution and alterations in the biosphere”.

And by the early 1990s their researchers studying the possibility for new exploration in the Arctic were well aware that human-induced climate change was melting the poles. Indeed, they used that knowledge to plan their strategy, reporting that soon the Beaufort Sea would be ice-free as much as five months a year instead of the historic two. Greenhouse gases are rising “due to the burning of fossil fuels,” a key Exxon researcher told an audience of engineers at a conference in 1991. “Nobody disputes this fact.”

But of course Exxon did dispute that fact. Not inside the company, where they used their knowledge to buy oil leases in the areas they knew would melt, but outside, where they used their political and financial might to make sure no one took climate change seriously.

Thoughts?

It was only really around 2007 when the Vostok ice-cores showed that [CO2] FOLLOWED global temperature rises after each ice-age. Clearly, over the past several hundred million years, the earth's temperature has been pretty independant of [CO2].
Prior to that, hypothesized (ie modeled) warming and increased [H2O] dominated "projections" such that reasonable anxiety could be fomented by the boys at the IPCC. Exxon has hedged its bets with all kinds of monies directed at renewables. (As have all the other "big oil" interests.)
Not surprised to see that a corporation is taking care of business (and profits) before worrying about humanity....
Other than that, the scam continues apace with CoP Paris on its way. Now, if only the darn temps would rise as predicted....projected...hoped for... oh well, here there are snow flurries today. We could use a little more warmth, even if the extra CO2 has improved our garden's yield.

GREAT NEWS:
"CLIMATE DEAL IS A WORTHLESS FRAUD"

I've long predicted this moment when the western political and
financial establishment would pass of a hollow climate deal
as if it represented a momentous breakthrough.

This way the charade protects their own political capital - while
having no meaningful teeth to the agreement. That makes the
deal acceptable to all - an elaborate architecture - all facade.

We broke the back of those parasitic scum with ClimateGate.

The faked data exposed by that hack just shredded their credibility.

Today's outcome is a HUGE victory for the TruthSeekers.
You won't hear that in the mainstream. So take a bow!

P.S.
Let's hear it for the Chinese ClimateGate hackers who took them out!!
