Protesters picket Scientology

JILL PENGELLEY, February 10, 2008 04:00pm

PROTESTERS in masks demonstrated outside the Church of Scientology's Adelaide headquarters this afternoon.

The three-hour rally was part of an international campaign against the church and coincided with similar events interstate and overseas.

An internet-driven group called Anonymous was behind yesterday's protest.

About 150 people in masks gathered in Victoria Square before marching on the church's Waymouth St office, where they were met by security officers guarding the building.

Curtains were drawn across the windows of the office and the protest was ignored by those inside.

Adelaide rally organiser David, who would not give his last name, said the group wanted to warn people Scientology was a dangerous cult.

"They charge money to go up levels in the church and they use psychological abuse to keep people reined in," he said.

He said people were hiding their faces because the church was known to harass people who opposed it.

Protesters carried banners and placards denouncing the church and distributed leaflets to passersby.

A statement from the church says Anonymous is a "group of cyber-terrorists" who hack into websites.

"Anonymous is perpetrating religious hate crimes against Churches of Scientology and individual Scientologists for no other reason than religious bigotry," the statement says.

Anonymous prepare for Scientology 'raids'

By Andrew Ramadge, Technology Reporter February 11, 2008 02:00am

DOZENS of protests against the Church of Scientology across the US, Canada and Western Europe are planned today as part of a campaign organised by the internet group "Anonymous".

Anonymous are a loose collection of internet users, including some hackers, who declared "war" on the church last month and temporarily prevented access to at least one official Scientology website.

Members of the group organised a worldwide day of protest to coincide with the birthday of Lisa McPherson, who died while in the care of a branch of the church in 1995. Criminal charges filed against the church over Ms McPherson's death were dropped in 2000.

A demonstration in central Sydney yesterday drew about 150 people, most of them carrying picket signs and wearing costumes or masks, who accused the church of financially exploiting its members and suppressing free speech.

Up to 200 people attended a similar demonstration in Melbourne, roughly half of them wearing masks. Protests were also planned in Perth and Adelaide.

The Church of Scientology's Oceania branch condemned the actions of Anonymous and described the group as "cyber-terrorists".

"Anonymous is perpetrating religious hate crimes against Churches of Scientology and individual Scientologists for no reason other than religious bigotry," the church said in a statement.

"It is Anonymous that has repeatedly attempted to suppress free speech through illegal assaults on church websites so as to prevent internet users from obtaining information."

Members of the Anonymous group released fresh information in preparation for the worldwide protests, including the locations of Scientology churches in the US, UK, Canada and France, restrictions on protesting behaviour, advice for speaking to the media and a press release detailing the group's motivations.

One of the guides published online included tips on how to appear confident when speaking to reporters and asked protestors not to use the term "raid" to describe the demonstrations.

In an open letter detailing the group's intentions, an Anonymous member said the protests would be non-violent and were aimed at exposing the church's "corrupt" leadership.

"Our first major objective is the revocation of (the church's) tax-exempt status wherever it has managed to obtain one," the letter said.

That's a good question.

Ostensibly, because Tom Cruise has been on rather too public a
mission of late on behalf of Scientology, and because the "Church"
tried to suppress their private video of him, which was leaked to
the internet. The war between Scientology and the Internet has been
going on since the mid 1990's. This is the latest and largest escalation.

I will write a full article on this, as it's got a lot of interesting angles.

My cat's vet and her husband, another animal doctor, who owned the pet clinic one town over from me, both moved to the Florida headquarters (Clearwater) last December to do humanitarian work - to "change the world," so they told me.
Well, I was curious, and they obliged by handing me 3 or 4 magazines published by Scientology. These mags were about helping, all right, but mostly how visible the members were making themselves (typical of religious organizations) and how that ties in with their program of elevating their own personal financial success.
I've thrown the magazines out, so I can't remember what their strategy's name is or anything... just that there's Books and DVD's, and classes and lectures to register for, to learn how to take control of your life and be a success.
Not for nothing, but that's similar to what a lot of the contemporary Christian leaders are into preaching these days on the TV.
Since when did Religion become an Infomercial with circuit motivational speakers? They got away from snake oil and soon they'll be telling us how to buy stocks and foreclosures for no money down.

I've been meaning to open a church... maybe my next career.

I bet they would have been recruited into 'Sterling Management Systems' or one of those $cientology fronts, RM - SMS specialises in dentists and dental-related professionals, but they purposely target vetinarians, too, as well as people in other fields.

Yeah, not remembering the name of the program from Scientology, like I said, but that's as good a name as any.

Also, off-topic, speaking of "recruiting" professionals, the folks at LaRouche's organization do a thing where they set up shop in front of Post Offices (if the PO has a public walkway, not a privately owned lot) and do their little political anti-GOP demonstrations... but what they're looking for is the sole-proprietor type, who winds up being sucked into a schedule of sales calls for contributing towards the PAC and the EIR magazine subscription. (I am guilty of falling into this a couple years ago, which is why I am cynical of LaRouchie postings here on BFN. Though I will say that they have backed off from me since I became "broke" and at least still forward the info anyway... BTW, a non-subscribing person can still read just as much off the LR website as do subscribers - Ha!)

Well, back to work... or whatever it's called that I do for free anymore.
