Publisher's Suicide, Boats, Aspen, Libby & Judy Miller

OK, so we have the inevitable issues
about the "suicide" of Philip Merill....

But the "Aspen" part has crossover with an old Libby letter to Judy Miller while she was incarceraed.

Publisher's Death an Apparent Suicide

By Eric Rich
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 20, 2006; 9:42 PM

Philip Merrill, the publisher and former diplomat whose body was found floating
in the Chesapeake Bay Monday after a 10-day search, apparently took his own life,
his family said tonight.

Merrill, 72, the leader of a publishing empire that includes Washingtonian magazine
and the Capital newspaper, underwent heart surgery a year ago and was on several
medications as a result, the family said. He had lately become fatigued and
unmotivated, they said.

The development was a startling revelation in a series of events that has gripped the
region since his disappearance June 10, when his boat was found, under sail but empty,
drifting in strong winds. A recreational boater found his body more than 11 miles away
on Monday, close to a shipping lane off Poplar Island.

Cheney called him "a friend, an adviser and a patriot." He described Merrill and his wife, Eleanor, as "some of our closest friends during our years in Washington."

Cheney's wife, Lynne, worked for Merrill and his wife at the Washingtonian for a number of years.

"I had the privilege of working with him when he was the assistant secretary-general of NATO and I was secretary of defense," the vice president said. "Phil was one of those rare individuals who was good at everything he ever tried, and he made major contributions -- public, business and philanthropic..."

...Merrill, 72, was found with a shotgun wound to the head and a small anchor tied around one or both ankles, according to a source familiar with the investigation...

ASPEN INSTITUTE -Board Of Trustees member

Philip Merrill is Chairman of the Board of Capital-Gazette Communications, Inc., which publishes the Washingtonian magazine, The Annapolis Capital, five other Maryland newspapers, and operates the Capital Investment Company. He is also Chairman of the Capital-Gazette Foundation and the Merrill Family Foundation. An entrepreneur and investor, Mr. Merrill has combined publishing and public service throughout his career. From 2002 to 2005, Mr. Merrill was Chairman and President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im), from 1990 to 1992 Merrill served in Brussels as Assistant Secretary-General of NATO. From 1983 to 1990, and again from 2001 to 2003, he served on the Department of Defense Policy Board. From 1981 to 1983 he was counselor to the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy. In 1988 the Secretary of Defense awarded him the Medal for Distinguished Service, the highest civilian honor given by the department.

A Slice of History
"Search crews on Monday combed the muddy waters of the Wicomico River, and helicopters scoured the area in a search for former CIA director William Colby, presumed drowned in a weekend boating accident."

What Do The 1996 Sudden Death Of Former CIA Chief William Colby
And The Current Expanding Heroin Production In Afghanistan Tell Us About The Bush Administration?

Here's the Libby angle, but only one quote below shows somebody
coming close to figuring that the cryptic para in Libby's letter was
just the CIA messing with their heads.

Some interesting stuff nonetheless.....

Excerpt of letter from Scooter Libby to Judith Miller:

“You went into jail in the summer. It is fall now. You will have stories to cover—Iraqi elections and suicide bombers, biological threats and the Iranian nuclear program. Out West, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They're in clusters, because their roots connect them. Come back to work—-and life. Until then, you will remain in my thoughts and prayers.”

Please humor the naive
Why would Libby need to communicate w/ Miller in the very weird, very risky way? Surely, there are more conventional, less icky means.

Speaking of anthrax (4.00 / 3)
Has anything ever come of the anthrax attacks that weren't that Judy received in the midst of the rest of the real attacks? Am I correct in remembering that her fake anthrax was the only one that ended up being fake--that all the rest was real (to the broadcast networks, the Dem Senators, etc.)?

When it happened, Judy still had a shred of credibility. But now that we see her in her full shilldom, has anyone gone back and reevaluated why she might have gotten a fake attack while everyone else was getting real ones?

Al Gore... (none / 0)
Al Gore is also an emeritus member... What's he doing there with the likes of Cheney, Miller, Armitage, Gergen, Hutchison, Condoleezza and Wolfy??? Is he just slumming it?

Seriously... what up with that?

We also have as members Madeleine Albright and Dianne Feinstein... Are these "Dems" in on the next great neo-con flim-flam? I doubt it... but maybe.

The company that sponsored the Aspen meeting
Don't let the "Little" fool you: Buyout firm Forstmann Little & Co. has been home to some big names. The company, which specializes in telecommunications, technology, education, and health care investments, counts among its former advisory board members Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Colin Powell, as well as George Shultz and Henry Kissinger. Since its founding in 1978, Forstmann Little has invested more than $10 billion in about 30 companies. It is led by the surviving founding group member, Ted Forstmann; Nicholas Forstmann died in 2001, and William Little died in 2000.

Who killed Philip Merrill?

Washington GOP insider Philip Merrill's body was dragged from Chesapeake Bay on Monday, 11 miles from where his sailboat was found last week, an anchor tied around his ankles and his head disfigured from a shotgun blast.

It now appears the multimillionaire publisher who held top Bush Family appointments at NATO and the Pentagon mysteriously "committed suicide" in exactly the same fashion as CIA-Watergate operative and JFK-assassination figure John Paisley.

Paisley "committed suicide" in 1978 on a solo sailing trip, also on the Chesapeake Bay. Like Merrill, Paisley's corpse was found with weights tied around his ankles and a gunshot wound to the head. His abandoned sailboat was loaded with top secret CIA files on various clandestine operations, despite Paisley's official retirement four years earlier.

Former CIA chief William Colby suffered a similar fate in 1996, when he allegedly took a nighttime canoe trip, leaving his house unlocked, computer turned on, and a half-made dinner in the kitchen. Colby's canoe was found floating upside down near his house.

Despite a major search effort by multiple agencies, his body didn't turn up for more than a week. And when it was found, it was a few feet away from where the canoe had been discovered. Colby was fired from the CIA by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld back in 1975 and replaced with George H.W. Bush.

Merrill vanished on June 10; his 41-foot sailboat was found by jet-skiers that Saturday evening.

On Tuesday, the family claimed in a statement that the 72-year-old Merrill was distraught over a heart condition -- so he bought a shotgun, took his beloved boat out on a sunny Saturday, tied the anchor around his feet, took his wallet out and left it inside the boat, shot himself in the face with a shotgun, and managed to neatly fall out of the craft and float for 11 miles and 11 days, upstream, with the anchor of a 41-foot-long sailing vessel tied to his ankles and dozens of search-and-rescue teams scouring the bay for his body.

The usual anonymous official told the Washington Post, "Obviously, he took his own life."

At least one of Merrill's colleagues was brave enough to call shenanigans.

"It is the most improbable thing I could conceive of," said Chuck Conconi, the editor-at-large of Merrill's magazine Washingtonian. Conconi worked side by side with Merrill for 15 years.

"From everything I could determine, he loved his life."

The Maryland Medical Examiner's office was also somewhat cautious on Tuesday, saying it was "waiting for further police examination" and "looking at the circumstances," according to the Baltimore Sun.

"Merrill was assistant secretary general to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the early 1990s and president of the Export-Import Bank of the United States from 2002 until last year," the Washington Post reported today.

"Throughout his working life, he took time away from his business interests to pursue diplomatic and intelligence assignments for the government. He served six administrations, mostly in the State and Defense departments."

John Paisley

John Arthur Paisley (d. September 24 1978) was an employee of the Central Intelligence Agency and has been linked in later years to both the John F. Kennedy assassination and the Watergate scandal.

In 1971 while we was Direcor of the CIA's Office of Security he became the CIA liaison to the White House Special Investigations Unit, commonly known as the "Plumbers". Paisley's continued interaction with the Plumbers is supported by White House memoranda. Despite these facts the Senate Watergate Committee did not follow up on the CIA connection further.

Paisley's link with the Kennedy assassination did not come about until the time of his death. On September 24, 1978, Paisley took his 31-foot sloop Brillig for a sail on Chesapeake Bay. He had radioed in requesting that lights at the dock be left on so he could return later in the evening. His boat never arrived. The next day the boat, containing Paisley's personal effects including an attaché case filled with classified documents, was recovered by the Coast Guard. They notified the OS who took possession of the documents. Paisley had retired from the CIA in 1974, the fact he had such documents later led the New York Times to do its own investigation and conclude the retirement was a sham and the CIA was misrepresenting Paisley as a low-level analyst when in fact he was involved in numerous high-level clandestine operations.

Several days later Paisley's body was found floating in the bay. The body had a single gunshot wound to the left side of the head and had been strapped and weighed down with diving weights. Eventually the death would be deemed a suicide.

At the time of his death the House Select Committee on Assassinations was hearing testimony on the defection of Yuri Nosenko. Nosenko claimed he had personally evaluated Lee Harvey Oswald for service in the KGB.

What's really bad is when these 'suicides' shoot themselves in the head - twice!
