This is a really good song from a soldier's point of view.
While US media seems to have permission this spring to demonize the soldiers, in reality they are abused by Congress, and their creditors in the private sector. Not to mention the thugs that are in the military (who tend to get promoted up the ranks)

I would post the .mp3 for all of you to listen, but I don't own the song.
Steve Earle is an Austin/Houston based musician of some fame here....he's played with Emmy Lou Harris, Kris Kristopherson, etc.
However, you can hear a free sample here:
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man's war

The lyrics are accurate, though. As you see, included the plight of the young 'enemy' soldier too. The song is about a year old and got a lot of radio play on the Pacifica station here.
Listen to it if you can find it, the music brings it to life. Maybe Fintan can get permission from Steve Earle to use it on a Next Level music break. Steve's very cool.

As a matter of fact, Fintan, there's enough of the chord changes in the clip that you could play this song yourself. ( hint hint wink wink) I sing it myself at home....

The soldier interviews you presented on the last broadcast, and informing us that it's the government who wants to polarize peace advocates to treat the boys as 'thugs', well, it got to me. But luckily we have too many activists who remember the Viet Nam era. And many of them, are veterans of that war. And for the soldiers, all wars are the same in the end.

Rich Man's War Lyrics

Steve Earle

Quote:
Jimmy joined the army ‘cause he had no place to go
There ain’t nobody hirin’
‘round here since all the jobs went
down to Mexico
Reckoned that he’d learn himself a trade maybe see the world
Move to the city someday and marry a black haired girl
Somebody somewhere had another plan
Now he’s got a rifle in his hand
Rollin’ into Baghdad wonderin’ how he got this far
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

Bobby had an eagle and a flag tattooed on his arm
Red white and blue to the bone when he landed in Kandahar
Left behind a pretty young wife and a baby girl
A stack of overdue bills and went off to save the world
Been a year now and he’s still there
Chasin’ ghosts in the thin dry air
Meanwhile back at home the finance company took his car
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

When will we ever learn
When will we ever see
We stand up and take our turn
And keep tellin’ ourselves we’re free

Ali was the second son of a second son
Grew up in Gaza throwing bottles and rocks when the tanks would come
Ain’t nothin’ else to do around here just a game children play
Somethin’ ‘bout livin’ in fear all your life makes you hard that way

He answered when he got the call
Wrapped himself in death and praised Allah
A fat man in a new Mercedes drove him to the door
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

Sentiment should include poor girls off the fight a rich man's war, too.

"she went to Iraq once and she was my hero she decided not to go back and she's even more my hero."
