They are forcing millions of elderly to endure the ravagies of the disease,
(fully 50% succumb to some form of Alzheimers) when scientific reseach
has indicated for sometime that it is preventable.
It is only in April of this year that Bush FDA officials announced that it had
concluded that "no sound scientific studies supported medical use of
marijuana for treatment in the United States, and no animal or human
data supported the safety or efficacy of marijuana for general medical use."
This "Bush Cabal" report was, of course, totally false, and came after
major studies in Spain and Israel had shown that Marijuana could prevent
the onset of alzheimers. It also contradicted the 1999 review by experts
at the Institute of Medicine (IOM), a division of the U.S. National Academy
of Sciences.
But a firestorm of protest from the scientific community had no effect.
The new Ohio State University study on marijuana and alzheimers is only
one of many studies with these kinds of results, most of which have been
supressed or under-reported.

It is only because there are now major U.S. institutions reporting this
finding that the MSM have given it some attention -- and these
researchers are banned from using the real herb, only a "synthetic"
version of the key ingredient.
I read an article a few months ago that there are a lot of angry medical
scientist who are being barred from pursuing this research because of
threats to their jobs, other grants or future research funding.
This was after there was sufficient international reseach showing benefits
from smoking the herb for the State of Oregon to ok medical use for
alzheimers patients:

Note the unbelievable unreality that surrounds this research.
When reporting results of the Ohio study:
| Quote: | But scientists still need to find a compound that reduces brain
inflammation without triggering a high, said Wenk, whose research is
funded by the federal government, which has long criminalized
marijuana.
"You can't add a high onto a dementia. You're just going to make the
person more impaired," he said. |
The record appears to show that the Feds have been systematically
suppressing this line on research and reporting of the the results, even
as millions suffer from a preventable disease.
It hard to express my outrage as my own father died of Alzheimers
just last year.

| Quote: | Marijuana's Key Ingredient Might Fight Alzheimer's
By Charles Q. Choi Special to LiveScience 05 October 2006
The active ingredient of marijuana could be considerably better at suppressing the abnormal clumping of malformed proteins that is a hallmark of Alzheimer's than any currently approved drugs prescribed for the treatment of the disease.
Scientists report the finding in the Oct. 2 issue of the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.
About 4.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease, which gradually destroys memory. As more people survive into old age, cases of Alzheimer’s disease are expected to triple over the next 50 years. There is no known cure.
The researchers looked at THC, the compound inside marijuana responsible for its action on the brain. Computer models suggested THC might inhibit an enzyme with the tongue-twisting name of acetylcholinesterase (also called AChE) that is linked with Alzheimer's.
AChE is known to help accelerate the formation of abnormal protein clumps in the brain known as amyloid plaques during Alzheimer's. This enzyme also helps break down the brain chemical acetylcholine, which is linked to memory and learning. Acetylcholine levels are reduced during Alzheimer's.
In lab experiments, the scientists found THC was significantly better at disrupting the abnormal clumping of malformed proteins. THC could completely prevent AChE from forming amyloid plaques, while two drugs approved for use against Alzheimer's, donepezil and tacrine, reduced clumping by only 22 and 7 percent, respectively, at twice the concentration of THC used in the tests.
"We're not advocating smoking dope, but if we can make analogues of THC, it could play a role in treating Alzheimer's," researcher Kim Janda, a chemist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., told LiveScience. "It would be nice to do more animal studies along these lines."
Past research on human brain tissues and experiments with rats have suggested that synthetic analogues of THC can reduce the inflammation and prevent the mental decline associated with Alzheimer's disease.
However, marijuana is not necessarily good for the mind. Prior investigations have shown that years of heavy marijuana use, consisting of four or more joints a week, can impair memory, decision making, and the ability to pay attention to more than one thing at a time.

Yeah - but only for as long as your stoned. As soon as the effect wears off, you're back to normal. What bullshit.
And what's all this that they've got to figure a way to take out the 'high' from cannabis compunds, before it can be used therapeutically? More bullshit - they use morphine and ritalin, don't they? Both these drugs, and the classes that they belong to produce 'highs' in people. Bullshit, again.
And claiming that THC-9 is the only active ingredient in cannabis - more bollocks - there are estimated to be over 200 active compounds in cannabis - and because of a lack of research in the area, we hardly know anything about the vast majority of them. If it's just THC (& CBD, &THCV, &CBN etc etc) that makes you high, then why do all the different strains and forms of cannabis all have measurably different highs?
It's got to be without a doubt one of the wonder plants on this planet, a real god-given gift, but these bastards are going against every sound, logical, moral ethic imaginable in their quest for corporate profits, and more than a smattering of Calvinistic puritanism.
