In 1945, most French people thought that the Soviet Union deserved
the most credit for Nazi Germany’s defeat in World War II — even though
the Soviets didn’t play much of a role in France’s liberation, relative to the
US and Britain. By 1995 and 2004, however, the French had changed their
minds, and were crediting the US as the biggest contributor to victory in
Europe (survey data from the French Institute of Public Opinion) :
The Russians were of course the real Victors and the painfull truth is that WW2 European War was over as a contest by late 1941 once the Siberian troops relocated to the battle of Moscow after the Japanese non agression pact.
All the Saving Private Ryan nonsense came 4 odd years later.
Casualities of the major Battles on the Eastern Front were measured in Millions.
Casualities on the Western Front were measured in thousands.
The US took its worst casualties at the Battle of the Bulge where according to the US DOD, 19,000 Americans were killed.
