With the weird weather this year ... my allergies (hay fever) have been really raising havoc with my sinuses ... so out of frustration I went out to the store to buy some decongestant. I very rarely take this stuff cause I hate the side effects but I was getting really sick of not being able to sleep due to the clogged nose especially at night.

I finally decided on which one to buy after reading the labels and had to take a card to the pharmacy counter to get the shit ... I decided on Allegra-D. The pharmacist immediately asked for my driver's license and started to enter the information in her computer. I asked what was going on and she said I needed to be registered into a Federal database to purchase any drug that contained pseudo-ephedrine!? I asked why and she said that this is the main ingredient in homemade methamphetamine. I must be getting old because I've never been in contact with it and have no idea how buying 20 allergy tablets could possible lead to a federal drug issue ...

Anyway it pissed me off and I did a little research on the interwebs and found this video ...

So folks, is the problem as bad as this video portrays ... or is it all a bunch of shit and over reach from the government? What do you think?

Yeah - it's true, except that it won't prevent a *single* gram from being made/imported into the US.

AFAIK most of the raw materials ((pseudo)ephedrine), lithium metal, red phosphorous, catalyst &c. (all depending on which 'recipe' you're planning to use) come into the US in 55-gallon drums mainly from Mexico.

As Peter said - watch 'Breaking Bad' - not only is it very good, but it is also a marvellously detailed portrayal of a white-bread chem teacher gone to the bad because of money problems. Cool

Are you saying, Hawk, that there in the US, you have *never* crossed paths with Methamphetamine? Shocked

Ah drugs, what a can of worms. Laughing
Excuse the tangents, after review it
seems to be all relative enough.

I don't think it's as rampant as
all of these fancy t.v. shows let on,
as sad as it is to see people fall into those substances,
or other hard drugs, it hits pretty close to home.
The culture of "disease addiction" and addiction entertainment
shows like "Intervention" (Fucking disgusting, as is Celebrity Rehab)
piss me off beyond what I am capable of expressing at the moment,
in a pretty good mood today.
A few months ago I actually gave in and started attending
AA meetings (never was a meth guy).
I am picky about who I let into my "network",
skeptical, careful what I say, but also have a great sponsor
who is a wonderful person and spiritual in a non-creepy way,
if that makes any sense. I joined amongst dire warnings
from people I respect that it was a deadly cult or not even worth
the effort. I found that this is 1/2 true. As stupid as some of the things
in the big book are and as ignorant (denial? Wink ) some members are about the real Bill Wilson
(---"spiritual awakening" was belladonna treatment,
massive usage of LSD in the 50s and 60s,greed and creepiness),
there are sensible people amongst that crowd that have been a great help in staying off the booze.
The disease model of addiction, Big Pharma, Freudian psychology,
and weird sub-sects of AA like Al-anon (telling all family members
"they have problems too and sins to confess" wtf?!!)
have infused themselves into the bad
parts of AA and has created a monster, a friendly smiley face
of destruction.

If there were more alternatives I would be there,
at least I didn't blow any of my money at a useless rehab,
perhaps I'll start my own branch of something like SMART Recovery
someday. Genetics may play a part in all of this, I am not denouncing
all research, but I am proud to be Irish, feck off!

Terence Mckenna makes some good points
Click video if you want to watch parts II and III, equally enticing.

Yes, I ended my experimentation with drugs back in the 80's. I live in the north east and in the cities it seems that prescription opiate drugs have the illicit market cornered.

I think the meth problem is very hidden in my area and is more prevalent in the south and southwest, I could be wrong though ... Question

I live a little bit north of Hartford, CT.
We loves our Meth round these parts, yerp.

Not really though, I feel like I encounter it
more than I should but have been living in
a low-income/rural area for a little while now.
According to statistics Meth is mostly
out in those states where nothing ever happens.

http://www.nationalmethcenter.org/STATES-CT.html

Quote:

the state has seen only 14 meth lab busts -- compared to national leader Missouri which was host to 5,864.

-- Among 32,931 substance abuse treatment admissions in 2010, just 64 (about two-tenths of one percent) were for methamphetamine.

They probably aren't counting legal drugs like Ritalin
in any of these "statistics".
They have to put labels on all of them now and
disclaimers in the commercials that say

"dudes, this is meth, do not fuck with this
especially if you are a kid"-FDA

All I had to go with when I was a kid and
got fed these things by mom and doctor was
"dude, do not crush this up and snort this
or it might be really, really awesome"-FDA

I wouldn't mind so much, but with all the ballyhoo about Meth on the one hand, and then on the other they're prescribing *millions* (not an exaggeration nowadays) of Phet-type stims, like the ubiquitous Ritalin ('kiddy coke') and quite often Methamphetamine itself (Desoxyn IIRC) in pharma form to kiddies *everywhere*.

Surely giving growing brains Methamphetamine *every day, multiple times a day* just might have some bad long-term effects... Naah, that's daft talk. Shocked

Weirdly enough, here in the UK we've had Amphet for *years* - it currently seems to be in that phase where it's been out of fashion the past decade or two.

We *never* see Meth in the UK though, and that's *always* puzzled me...

See, if you can make Amphet, you can easily do the extra step to make it into Meth, which is something like 8x stronger by weight and effects lasts 2-3x as long, and it can be freebased and smoked.

And the chem behind it is really Org.Chem 101 stuff - so easy to do, and like I say, if you've got Amphet already, it's even easier to perform one more step and make the far more valuable Meth...

That's a kicker ain't it?
Our brains weren't producing enough Meth?
How the fuck did they sell that?
Maybe I am just dumbed down by
all that shit I was essentially forced
to take at the ages of 10 (earlier? probably but can't
recall at the moment) to 16 (decided
to drop everything, no more psycho-iatrists,
no more pills, at around 15/16).

Those were nasty times that I am still coming to terms
with 10 years later. There was trouble at home, trouble
paying attention at school. Naturally the drugs made
me more unloving, disassociated at school, violent at home.
The meth-type ones were gradually phased out but then
wellbutrin (Bupropion), Celexa (Citalopram), you name it.

Sometimes I wish I had waited until later in life to try marijuana,
but in the above context I think it may have saved my ass. Laughing
I was always creative but it kind of put everything into perspective.
I paid better attention at school, became actually interested in the
material presented, the internet was hitting big, I quit the football
team and started playing guitar for the HS Jazz band, 9/11 happened Shocked,
the world became a whole lot bigger and more confusing,
then finally quit the addictive narcotic meds I was told were good for me.

Should have stuck with the hash instead of the Jack Daniels (more like
Ten High vomit ) ,
but I have no regrets. It was a learning experience. Laughing

that's the part i love the most.

yesterday i went to get syringes for my cat who is diabetic. normally i buy it at the vet, but i ran out and they weren't open this past Saturday. (they usually are.)

anyway, i go to our local big-box pharmacy (where i am a customer on their database) and they told me that they needed an okay from my cat's vet.

so i said, but this is a state where no script is required for syringes.

no matter, said the Rx lady. it's company policy.

oh, okay, so company policy supercedes state law. i did not know that.

anyway, after some debate, which went nowhere except the above phrase repeated (company policy), i finally said, but i am a customer here.

she looked up my account in the database and said, okay we can give you the syringes, but you have to sign a form.

geezus mary and joseph. i don't think a day goes by that someone behind a counter doesn't look you up or enter you into some database.

All the better to serve you (up to those that would exploit your tendencies, frailties etc.)

Most bad ideas start with good ones that the unscrupulous turn to their advantage at your disadvantage.

i think it all started with those damned reward cards and discount cards some years back... and every service provider asking for one's SS#.
