The Mayan Calendar was finally understood from a Western Perspective by Ian Xel Lughold and Carl Calleman.
Ian has unfortunately Passed on and the Mayan Majix site is being looked after by Madaline. http://www.mayanmajix.com/
Carl Calleman's site can be found here:- http://www.calleman.com/
And if you find this interesting, then you can join in a group of like minded people at this site:- http://www.treeoflifecelebration.com/

He (Ian Xel Lungold) had a snappy presentation of his pragmatic interpretation of Carl Calleman's spiritual take on the Mayan day-keeper part of the calendar. It can be found on Youtube in its entirety and is well worth the watch.
There is some "controversy" concerning Calleman's interpretation and the actual Mayan elder's presentation of their heritage. While the spurious "Dreamspell" version produced by José Arguelles has been pretty much nullified by the various indigenous bodies, Carlos Barrios remains a stalwart in the presentation of the preferred and ancestral calendar as still practiced in Guatemala.
A good place for actual and factual info is the Saq'Be site.
