Is there any way to really and truly REMOVE the "checking for adobe updates" that plagues the startup of my windows vista? It seems I've tried everything but still it is there.

Back in the old days, there were a lot of places an application could hook itself to run at startup. You had to check the registry in more than one place, as well as your start menu. With Windows Vista, there’s a built-in panel that handles all that for you.

To quickly get to this panel, you can open Control Panel, and then type “startup” into the search box. The link for “Stop a program from running at startup” shows up immediately.

Now you can see the Windows Defender screen that lets you manage the startup programs.

You can choose to Remove or just Disable any startup item using this panel, as well as lots of other useful information so that you can see what each item is.

It's still doing it. I disable or delete the update as you said and it just keeps coming back!

Disable Adobe Updater with Adobe Customization Wizard 8
http://blog.stealthpuppy.com/deployment/disable-adobe-updater-with-adobe-customization-wizard-8/

but there is a version 9

Adobe Reader 9 for Windows
http://blog.stealthpuppy.com/deployment/deploying-adobe-reader-9-for-windows/

It may be a virus.

Remove everything Adobe from your O/S.
http://netomatix.com/development/VistaAddRemove.aspx

Restart

Then go to Adobe and get latest updates.

Or get a new O/S.
One thing that can be done, if you buy new, you can setup your security features on the microprocessor. Firewall etc...pull some pins low - ones high etc...You tell the chip just let this IP use this PC, no one else etc...very effective.
