Edward Teller, the father of the H-bomb, promoted the idea of using H-bombs to pump Gamma Ray or X-ray lasers. An H-bomb is a fusion reactor. If you examine how Gamma Ray Bursters work you can understand how to build a X-ray or Gamma ray laser. Gamma Ray bursters are neutron stars that go super nova. A star like an H-bomb is a fusion nuclear reactor. If you understand plasma physics, a star is nothing more than a huge ball of fusioning plasma, you can build a gamma ray weapon. The U.S. in the National Labs has been building PLASMA CORE Nuclear reactors since at least 1959. If you can make a miniature neutron star inside a plasma core reactor and then make that star go NOVA. Then you can build a Gamma Ray Laser. If I am right on this the USAF has had a Gamma Ray Laser weapon since at least 1967. This is not a defensive weapon at all. America put these laser warheads in orbit above the Soviet Union in the 1960's hidden in stealth satellites. They can destroy whole cities at the push of a button. There is no warning time with these weapons. This how America won the Cold War. The Soviets were not able to build similar weapons. America controls space. Just like the ancient Greeks built their cities on top of hills or acropolis' for strategic advantage. America has built a space based weapon system for the same reason. This Newsweek article documents the first test of this weapon.

Newsweek, January 9, 1967; page 12

Nuclear Envelope For Defense

The underground nuclear blast that shook the state of Nevada a few days before Christmas resulted from a test of a highly sophisticated anti-missile H-bomb warhead. The new weapon can release a high-neutron blast in an "envelope" vast enough to knock out with one shot multiple warheads which might be fired from an incoming enemy missile. The defensive warhead is for use on the super-Nike-Zeus missile that Douglas Aircraft now has on its drawing boards.
